The goal of this webinar, presented on June 19th 2014 by Pascale Mantoura, was to present a framework on Population Mental Health for public health.
Mental health is an essential component of health. Less than optimal mental health is linked to consequences such as decreased physical health, decreased productivity or academic achievement, social and economic difficulties, poor quality of life, etc.
Many Canadian policy/strategy documents aim to increase the well being of the population through global mental health strategies. These strategies emphasize the promotion of population mental health, preventing mental disorders and increasing the quality of life of those living with a mental disorder. They are based on the premise that physical health and mental health are intertwined and consider the factors that act on individual, social and environmental levels to develop mental health throughout the life course. As such, mental health is a concern in public health and population mental health (PMH) is important for all public health practitioners.
The objective of this webinar was to present a framework on Population Mental Health for public health and to be able to:
- identify links between mental health and mental disorders;
- describe the components of population mental health;
- establish links between public health practices and population mental health.
